Black Brighton was founded, expanded and nurtured by Jade Hylton alone. The word Black refers to Jade’s project in which she photographically portrayed the journey she started in her early twenties, to connect with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) people in the city to find connection, solidarity and to learn more about her ‘otherness’ in others like her. As a writer and poet, she felt using the word Black, which can have many negative connotations, could be turned to a positive in calling this journey in connecting others under the name of ‘Black Brighton.’ She first exhibited Black Brighton in Chengdu, China (2019) – her first solo exhibition – and has been noted as the first Black Female to exhibit in Chengdu, possibly China. To this day she is still bringing people from the BIPOC community together through her art and business.
